Bridging the Gap: Tradition, Innovation and the Future of the Church
By Amatu Onundu Christian-Iwuagwu (PhD)
Grounded in theological reflection and tested through practical leadership, Bridging the Gap analyses how churches can navigate the complex intersection of tradition, innovation, and organisational change. The book integrates insights from engineering systems thinking, parish leadership, church planting, intercultural ministry, public engagement, and diocesan governance.
It offers frameworks for reimagining mission, developing resilient leadership, fostering community cohesion, and building structures that support long-term church health. This is an essential resource for clergy, lay leaders, students of ministry, and anyone discerning how the Church can flourish in a rapidly evolving cultural landscape.
About the Author
Revd Preb Dr Amatu Christian-Iwuagwu is a priest, strategic leader, theologian, and public voice shaping the future of mission and ministry in the Church of England. Born in the midst of the Nigerian Civil War and carried to safety by his mother, his story embodies the conviction of his name — Iheanyichukwu: nothing is impossible with God.
Before ordination, he trained as an engineer, became a Chartered Engineer, and worked as a Project Manager across the telecommunications, railway, and oil & gas industries. His experience managing high-pressure operations, complex systems, and multi-disciplinary teams continues to shape his leadership in mission, organisational transformation, and church renewal.
He later served as an Archdeacon in the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), where he led clergy development, vocational discernment, and interfaith engagement, strengthening Christian–Muslim relations and community cohesion.
With 25 years of ministry across rural, urban, and multi-ethnic contexts, he has led parish revitalisation, church planting, clergy development, and diocesan-wide mission strategy. He founded the thriving Anglican Igbo Church of the Holy Trinity, London, a pioneering multicultural worshipping community now numbering hundreds.
Dr Christian-Iwuagwu serves on the London Diocesan Senior Leadership Team, the General Synod, and the Church Commissioners, contributing nationally to mission policy, racial justice, governance, estate ministry, and affordable housing initiatives.
His ministry blends tradition and innovation, shaped by Scripture, sacramental life, intercultural theology, and a passion for digital mission.
A father, mentor, pastor, and advocate for God’s Beloved Community, he writes and leads with a vision for a Church that is inclusive, resilient, Spirit-led, and courageously future-facing.
